mothers' day

i'm officially late for everything, so here's a belated happy mother's day post! mama loves out there, i hope you had a nap and a love-filled day. i had the best of both worlds: some time to wake up slowly and spend a quiet morning with anne, and the rest of the day was spent with my favorite person on the planet, and many other loved family members. before recapturing the day, though, i would like to say a big 'ol thank you to my anne, whose mothering i so admire, and who i couldn't do this parenting stuff very well without. i love this picture, because it captures the willing, generous, and playful position anne is most often in with our child:

they're playing doctor with at least 50 stuffed animals, each one with an individual diagnosis. she is on the rug engaging and imagining-- this is the sort of scene i absolutely love, but can only tolerate for about 3 or four minutes before becoming bored out of my mind. i love that she has the patience for this.

darren, jackie, and kai came down for the weekend. kai and i had some auntie/nephew time while anne and adah made princess castles out of mud, and then we all saw the jefferson dancers together, which is always an inspirational experience for me. the weekend weather was perfect, and we spent mother's day afternoon playing outside and visiting with my mom, grandma sara, and adoptive grandma janet.

before dinner some family members gathered to plant bonnie and adah's tree in our side yard. it's a kwanzan flowering cherry tree-- an early blooming tree that bonnie loved. last spring they went and picked one out at a nursery in washington and never got to plant it before she died.

it's now safely in the ground, nestled between a mystery tree and the ginkgo that adah's godmother brought for her when she was baptized. there are so many many blessings and remembrances in this ground i think we may have to live here forever.
