balk, balk

we gave our six chickens up for adoption this morning while adah was roller skating. i'm honestly relieved, but little heavy hearted to see my bug's friends go.

anyone who knows our little knows that she loves these birds. she's been a chicken whisperer since she was two when we decided it would be a good idea to raise a bunch of chicks in our downstairs bathtub. she's raised and best-friended two separate flocks, chased the wandering fuckers around the neighborhood, took them to the park on multiple occasions, fed them lots of treats, and spent many summer afternoons swinging with them in the hammock. she's also grieved the ones that died during that horrible portland heat rash a couple summers ago. her heart has grown bigger because of them, and i don't think that's overstating.

anne and i have grown weary of them, however, especially during the long and muddy portland winter. every afternoon neither of us want to go to the backyard swamp and take care of them. we'd love to leave them out all day, but even when we clip their wings, they fly over our fences and escape. "we're just watching the show!" some people yelled down the street the other day while four school-aged children and i attempted to chase them back home. it was only funny the first 50 times, and as summer nears, we'd like to start planting our garden. since they fly over our short fence into the front yard, they immediately demolish anything we plant.

adah can't hear these reasons yet, and that's understandable. fortunately they've just moved about a mile away to alex and laura's house, so she can visit them there. she asked us to deliver them while she wasn't here, so we're giving her some time...

some birthday favorites:

                birthday wishes from chicago.

the girl party goes outside for a romp at the park.

 rice krispie treats on fire.

that's my girl, genetically predisposed to grumpy.

alex introducing the magic of worry dolls.

marchness

adah,

because of you, bug, march is my favorite month. this afternoon we finally got a glimmer of sun, so we spent the afternoon outside. you were thrilled by the reincarnation of the rhubarb, and began plotting all the things we could make with it when it gets strong again. i was perplexed by the lack of sprouting daffodils. where are they? grandma bonnie always called you her daffodil girl because there's always a sudden trail of them right before your birthday.

you are going to be FIVE YEARS OLD in just a few days. this simultaneously makes me grieve for each of your ages past, and be completely giddy about all that's ahead. i like to think that i celebrate you in small ways each day, but this particular anniversary of birth seems like a big one, and i can't wait wait to celebrate with you throughout the coming week. we have a big surprise in store. think princess industrial complex. it's gonna be great!

lovelovelovelove, infinity.

colors of the day:

dyed rice
crayola geometry

loser.

i committed to writing each day in march and asked my students to do the same, and at this point, my 12 year olds with with serious writing aversions and disabilities are doing much better than me. don't get me wrong. i'm totally proud of them: one made a tumblr account, two have blogs, one began an online food journal. they are pretty much awesome.

last week i was up until many midnights writing report card narratives and a novel study unit, and then a fever came crashing down into my head when i got to olympia and was about to kick kai's ass in a black light mini golf tournament. i think i lost my "favorite aunt" status because i could hardly move for a full 24 hours, which meant no fun for us. kai, i promise i'll make it up to you.

a slice of life from way back then.

    • Megan Nealis I have no recollection of the construction paper body. I must've been in a blackout or in the process of chalking "dykes make good moms" in front of main building.

    • Sarah Davis I'm with Laura. When I've tried to explain Antioch, I have described the spring of 1997--the strains of Ani cranking out of North's windows, the echo from the stoop of people trying to raise money for kegs for our "dances."

    • Johnny Dispeptic You know. i always thought that attending antioch i was in some kind of cultural black hole during the nineties, like i didn't know what movies were playing, it took me an extra four months to know what pop tunes were out there, BUT now i am starting to feel like antioch was the epitome of nineties. all the things that seem so quaint about the nineties (a la portlandia) seem so antioch. i am sure it is MUCH more complicated than that though,... wait is that so nineties too?
