port angeles: where the mountains meet the sea

no, this is not a post about how i almost swallowed a few ounces of toxic mercury from my amalgam filling a couple breakfasts ago, and how i'm convinced that my daughter and i both have serious neurological damage as a result.

this is a post about how the brutha has moved to port angeles, washington, which means that there are no more nealis' or kaplans' in montana. i'm sure the big sky state will miss our quirks, but we will not miss the 14 hour drive. because even though my brother and i find it necessary to quibble and quabble when we're even remotely near each other, we do feel the need to see each other often.

so... we spent the past weekend in port angeles and it was lovely. nothing like getting out of your own place so you can forget about your OCD tendencies and realize how much you love your home, even after only being gone for 32 hours. we had a great time, despite the fact that i made the mistake of ordering a prime rib sandwich on some really bad sourdough at a seafood restaurant. the foodie had to rear its pretty little head and make a scene. but just a little one, and it was much later in the day.

on saturday we hung out in a mini aquarium and watched my brother almost get his hand bit off by a crab. then we went out to eat, and spent most of the afternoon relaxing in his new living room, antagonizing him with with questions about his personal life. we took adah to the park, cooked a late dinner, and lazed around while anne spent a good deal of time looking up various spider breeds on google images due to the fact that there were several of them hanging from the porch. my dad, the guy who used to be a naturalist, was surprisingly convinced they were deadly.

the next morning, as we went out to the backyard in search of slugs to befriend, we discovered a goldmine: apples! gorgeous yellow plums that were so ripe they were translucent in parts! crimsonly pears! holy crap. out came the luggage to pack the pounds of fruit into. anne had to proclaim the word "enough" many times. she knows what the kitchen becomes when i go picking-crazy and then have to deal with the aftermath.

after the harvesting we headed to olympic national park for a hike. oh my god, it was beautiful in there: an all day twilight. we learned that the key to hiking with little people is the important game of hide and seek. little one counts in front of the tree, sometimes in an interesting order, and you head up the trail to help the hike progress. there was a whole world to hide and seek and breathe new in...

ballad of a stalker

when we arrived home after spending the afternoon making pasta necklaces, adah mentioned that she wanted to walk over to zanna's and give her the antennae headband that her and muh made in preparation for their matching halloween costumes. when we got there, zanna and mama joanna weren't home yet. then there were these lyrics:

is zanna home?
i want to give her this headband for a present.
is zanna home?
i want to go in.
i want to go in there.
give me your keys.
we're going in there.
i don't see her van coming.
we're going to wait right here.
is her in there?
where are they?
maybe her mom's in the shower.
i want to go in for a snack.
i want to go in there.
i want to go in their hoooowse!

.......................................................................

now stay tuned for some iambic pentameter.

NOW TRY AND GO TO SLEEP TONIGHT!

celebrate good times, come on!

i'm channeling kool & the gang.

our bug has been getting some negative press from the land of whine lately, so i thought i'd take this opportunity to note some celebratory moments. first of all, we had an emotional but lovely family reunion when anne got back from her mom's. we were eager to welcome her home whole-heartedly, as mom-sick and grief-torn and exhausted as she was. this loss has been difficult on so many levels, but adah The Great Distracter attached herself right back onto her maddy's hip, and they immediately got to playing. a flubber party on the floor was time-sensitive and task #1.
we spent the weekend at the beach, for anne's birthday, where it is so much easier to breathe. we spent lots of time enveloped in sand, and lots of time playing games in the cabin, toddler-style. this involves an attention span of maybe 2 minutes per game, and lots of little playing cards getting all scrambled up and strewn on the floor. anne taught adah how to play chess, scrabble, and checkers (HA!) while i got the lasagna ready, but adah's favorite board game of all was candy land. those cute little candy pictures on the cards almost put her over the edge. i had to squelch the teacher in me when i busted back into the room, ready to teach the kid how to count 2 double purples and so on, when i quickly realized that she had her own special system to abide by: pick up a card, put it down if it didn't have candy on it, pick up another, etc. if she wasn't getting lucky, it was time to simply ransack the deck for the rest of the gumdrops and peppermints. plain colored squares just wouldn't do.

in other news, our little local-vore has quite an interest in what's currently growing in our little part of the world. the other day, when gathering just about the last pail of blackberries from the bushes surrounding our house, she mentioned that she was going to see if the raspberries or strawberries had grown back yet. i could hear her talking to the berries from a few feet away: "you're still not back yet. you're not in season anymore, but maybe next time!" and on the way to the coast, right at the tip of garibaldi, she began reciting a litany of what was currently growing: tomatoes, grapes, potatoes, pears, apples, plums... she makes me proud.

it's also been an incredible joy to watch her play lately, mostly with animals and dolls. here is her new favorite baby, who she named "judy anne." jude is scary and rouge-doused and HUGE. adah actually grunts when she picks her up and tries to carry her around. i got her at a kid's clothing swap a couple weeks ago, almost as a joke, but she fell in love with her immediately, so now we can only call her "chucky's bride" behind adah's back. anyway, it's fascinating to watch her play out and rehearse life's little joys and dilemmas. bedtime dramas, for instance. she brings her babies in bed, bounces them, has them do this pathetic little whimper, and then, pretending to be their mama, says in a sort of stern voice, "it's time for bed. you have to go to sleep now. i'm sorry!" apparently she's picked up on some of my own sadness and reluctance when i'm trying to put her to bed when she'd rather be at the park across the street. anyway, 2.5 is hard. cherishable. hard. cherishably hard. like that.

this is what happens

when you walk down the aisle for some art supplies and suddenly realize that there was no getting past the shelves and shelves of babies.

dear grandma betty,

we miss you already and are wishing you the utmost peace.

oh the lengths she will go

to avoid bedtime lately. the past couple weeks have been rough-o for reasons galore, but after my patience wilted, and i could not read one more book, perform one more goodnight puppet show, give one more typewriter kiss, blow out one more candle, sing one more song or say one more prayer, i had to say "fuck it" to the kid, and let her follow me downstairs where i stubbornly lectured her that if she was going to have to come downstairs and be sleep deprived and run the risk of not feeling good the whole entire next day because of it, she better not try to have any fun. i told her she could just sit there and watch me wash the dishes and return phone calls. wasn't that nice of me? i also told her that no, she wouldn't be eating or drinking or playing with anything either BECAUSE IT WAS BEDTIME. i know, we're talking mother-of-the-year award here. it was the third day in a row that i did not have five minutes to myself, literally, in a 14 hour period.

tonight was a little better, but because i had to tutor upstairs and the sitter had not been skilled in the area of idiosyncratic bedtime rituals, we started the whole deal a little late. adah had already eaten dinner, but it was past 7:00, and besides really wanting to go to the park, she wanted a salad. i didn't think it was funny at the time, because i happened to not be in the mood to whip up a salad when i was trying to cook dinner for dan and clean up the container of compost that fell onto the floor. but there was no talking her out of it.

"I WANT A SALAD. "
"I WANT A SALAD WITH RAISINS AND GOAT CHEESE."
"I WANT A SALAD WITH RAISINS AND GOAT CHEESE RIGHT NOW!!!"

to infinity.

what a mighty salad cheerleader. was this procrastination or a real need for spinach? leaning towards the former, but what the hell. my 2 year old wanted a salad, and i have definitely had to choose my battles lately. in fact, speaking of battle choosing, here's a picture of her painting her toenails and feet with crayola markers.
