away i went

i have been so busy playing dr. sears that i have not, in 3.5 years, been away from my child for a weekend. i'm happy to report that i got through my three day vay-cay to seattle without a lick of separation anxiety, and was pretty elated the entire time. okay, i did speed a little on the way home to pick up bug from school, and i did wander around the city yearning to buy my girls presents, but for the most part, i basked in the glory of my complete lack of responsibilities.

ace flew in from vermont to meet me in seattle, which was so very kind of him, and every ten minutes or so one of us felt compelled to profess our utter happiness. unsurprisingly, we are fantastic traveling companions and had a blast with all the speed wandering and all of the food. he agrees with me that if you split everything, you get to eat more. which is fun.

it began with brunch at macrina. since you want to know what we had, it was this: maple polenta topped with two eggs and bacon crème fraiche, herb-roasted potatoes, an organic greens salad, and seasonal (that was questionable) fruit. we also had a buttermilk waffle with fresh washington-foraged huckleberries, brown sugar mascarpone, and toasted almonds. it came with a side of bacon and we washed it all down with some excellent espresso drinks. while we were hungry and waiting for this food, we got a loaf of olive ciabiatta and ace had a moment of culinary clarity. he decided that after all these years, olives were actually good. phew. next thing you know, erica will be craving mustard and i might find a good way to prepare brussel sprouts.

besides eating, which did take up a considerable part of our time, we also saw capitalism: a love story (2nd matinee in 3 years? and oh how i love a matinee), scored a quadrilla for 50% off at a natural toy store, reminisced over some old-school ani difranco and practiced gratitude that we are no longer 20, walked halfway across the city to the center for wooden boats and missed the boat, watched people take pictures of their donuts at this place, washed the donuts down with some wheat grass, looked at photographs, slept in, goodwilled, debated over the caramelized beet ravioli at el lago or the supposedly luscious lasagna, anddecided to go for the ethereal meatballs and handmade fettuccine.

my frugal self was plummeted into a world of gluttony minus the drinks. we decided that we need to do this regularly-- pick a city and explore it. where should we go next?

thanks for everything, ace, and thanks to annie for being such a great boat-making maddy, and for taking our kid to the theatre for the first time and for being all around supportive and encouraging. i was grateful for the time away, and also grateful to be back.

septembering

september was largely a month of birthday celebrations and new beginnings. for more pics, click here. an update with actual words might come in the near future, in addition to a picture of our new housemate emily with a cabbage larger than her head.
