because every story needs a climax

here are my favorites, on the first week of summer vacation:

as you can see, things were going beautifully UNTIL WE LOST THE DOG.

this is lucy, the pure-bred $1,000 boston terrier, that the whole family is attached to. grandpa was taking a nap and wouldn't be able to make sure that lucy didn't eat michelle and leif's furniture, so we tied her up outside while we went exploring at the tidepools. when we came back a while later, she was gone, and oh holy hell, kai was losin' it. and me too-- because the thought of kai having to endure another loss was about to kill me. adah and i weren't coming home until we found the dog.

bug was a great sport and we drove around calling "LUUUUUUUUUCY" out the windows, while pa and kai walked around town by foot. rockaway is a small town, but still. it's huge when you're missing a loved puppy.

adah and i spoke to every human we saw, and in the meantime, while pa and kai were walking around, people were asking them if THEY had seen lucy. reason #311 to love small towns. adah and i went to the the grocery store, and the cashier said that on her way to work she had seen a black and white boston terrier in someone's car outside the whale spot cafe. she called some people. we made a lost dog sign, and tried to xerox them there, but they were out of toner. we made more by hand.

there was no pound, so we went to the police station. rockaway only has 2 police officers, and they weren't there. we went to the post office to hang up a sign, saw a policeman driving by, and chased him down. turns out he held the key.

he led us to a motel, where two kind men were taking care of the little fucker. when asked how we could thank them, they wouldn't let us take them to dinner, but they did request a few enjoyable items: a bag of fritos, a 6-pack of pabst, and some milk. i kid you not.

thank you, strange dudes, for rescuing lucy, and for not making us endure another heartbreak.

Hey team! I was wondering if you and Adah want to hang with me and Jonie in PDX on the 5th. I will be staying up for a few extra days and Eric will be heading back for class. You don't have to take me to the beach, but maybe that wading pool?
