adah and are ending our summer with one last trip to the east coast. we flew into boston last tuesday, had a short visit with alicia, and uncle ace picked us up to spend a few days in vermont. but first stop: concord, massachusetts, home of walden pond.
still beautiful, despite the crowds, parking fees, and gift shop. we wondered if thoreau was rolling in his grave, but the man at the cash register assured us that he was not.
i ♥ vermont. it's idyllic, and the people are so very kind. EVERY SINGLE PERSON says hello and smiles when you pass-- every single one! amazing. you can even drive down a long road in a rural area and encounter a speakeasy happening at a chocolatier. if you go on a wednesday, you can dip local bacon in fair trade chocolate and have a homemade strawberry-rosewater soda. if you wear a beard-- made out of napkins, feathers, or actual facial hair, you get a discount and a compliment from the loud pianist/accordian player. i love this crazy world.

the next morning we decided to visit shelburne farms. at that point, adah had had a string of pretty difficult days, and we weren't even sure if she'd be able to walk to the children's farm yard without another major explosion. it was a close call, but when we got there, it was a joy to see how soothed and comforted she is by animals. i'm really glad we went.
this is the donkey i tried to smuggle home with us :
we visited with all the animals, had a nice farm cart lunch, and got to milk a cow and a goat. check that off my hippie bucket list.
we spent our last day in vermont at the mad river. i sat in the sand embroidering a present for ace, while the aunties and uncy swam with bug and skipped rocks. such a relaxing afternoon. our friends shannon and LE, who just moved to burlington, also joined us at the river, which was a nice collision of worlds. afterwards we went out for maple creemies.
oh, and can't forget this sweet, queer moment:
xo.
