so the nighttime potty training is now not going so well. the experiment started off well enough with our ingenious idea to extend "co-sleeping wednesday" to "co-sleeping-every-night-of-the-week-until-the-neurons-in adah's-brain-remind-her-not-to-pee-in-the-middle-of-the-night" connect. ya know what i'm saying? this plan involved anne randomly waking up every hour or so and asking adah, "honey, do you want me to take you to the bathroom? are you sure?" i woke up every time the question was asked, but it didn't bother me, it being such a sweet and conscious act of parenting.
our experiment was going well for several days in a row until last thursday when i woke up in a stream of pee and a giddy, "cuddle with me!" oh well, we figured, 1 out 4 nights isn't so bad. but then there was another one like it yesterday morning, and you want to know what happened last night? more pee, discovered when anne was crawling into bed after a particularly difficult day of lost keys and kitchen banter. off went the sheets and began the whole hoopla of undressing and redressing the bed. anne put the bug back in her bed while she cleaned and baking soda-ed the mattress; i went to get the kiddo cleaned up and discovered, with exasperation, that she peed in her bed as well, during the three minutes she spent lying on it. she was having a peeing frenzy. fun times.
this morning, when i asked adah what she thought we should do about this dilemma, she responded with a genuinely confused, "i don't pee when i sleep with you in your bed." she was in a nighttime blackout. i want to be in one of those the next time we need to change the sheets.
any advice? the only reason that this is an urgent matter is because adah has had to endure three rounds of antibiotics for a persistent bacterial infection that is exacerbated by cloth diapers. every other natural approach has been tried without any substantial results. maybe she's just not ready and we have to try disposables and i can make up for it by minimizing my garbage to one small biodegradable bag per month and not washing any laundry until may. sound good?
i get that there's a physiological readiness issue, but don't you think that keeping a kid in diapers is just asking her to continue peeing in them? if i had to wear a diaper, i wouldn't be motivated to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. okay, never mind i said that.

it's never fun stripping the bed in the middle of the night, and waking up in pee is awful. but i'm still trying to keep from waking zanna with my laughter as i read your post.
since we don't have the special circumstance of serious chronic skin problems, i just diaper her, then close my eyes, put my fingers in my ears, sing "lalalala" and hope the bean figures it out before she starts getting slumber party invitations.

when i was four or five the dream that proceeded my wetting the bed went like this:
i would be playing in my room near the door. then i would move out of my room, and be right in front of the wooden stairs leading downstairs. i would look down the stair case, and todder back and forth, and then fall forward, before i could hit the first stair i would be awake and uncomfortable.
aren't our brains weird?
i don't have any suggestions, but if it would help you feel better about using disposable diapers, we could all agree to do one less load of laundry or reduce our trash out put slightly, between now and may, so that you could spread the pain around?!
